Benefits of Using Sand as Bedding in Broiler Cages

Many poultry farms spread a layer of sand in broiler cages, effectively creating a thick “mattress” for the birds. Particularly in some southern regions or during the rainy season in the north, many farmers provide sand in the chicken houses. So what are the benefits of placing sand in broiler cages?

1. Provide sand baths for the chickens. Chickens enjoy sand bathing. In summer, they often take sand baths to keep themselves clean, ward off parasites, and maintain good health.

Second, it can help cool them down. In the hot summer weather, chickens lack sweat glands. They enjoy lying on sand piles and playing in the sand; the contact between their skin and the sand helps dissipate heat, lower their body temperature, and protect them from the summer heat.

3. Sand bedding absorbs moisture; in humid conditions, pathogenic microorganisms readily proliferate, compromising chicken growth and health and reducing egg production. Sand bedding helps to wick away moisture, keeping the broiler house environment dry and sanitary, thereby promoting optimal poultry health.

4. It aids digestion. Chickens lack teeth and rely on ingesting sand to help grind their food; therefore, a lack of sand can lead to indigestion, so broiler coops and exercise areas must be lined with sand.
